You're a Star Scarf

I had found the stitch pattern Star Stitch Pattern 1 in The Harmony Guides 440 more Knitting Stitches Volume 3 and had been meaning to make it into a scarf for my niece while she was in high school. I never got around to it but while flipping through the guide (page 76 in my book) it caught my eye again and I decided to try it out.

Materials:

1 Skein Malabrigo for button version (2 can be used for a long scarf, fringed or unfringed).
Size 9 needles
3 Buttons

Star Pattern:

Row 1 (RS) - Knit
Row 2 - P1, * make star, P1, rep from * to end.
Row 3 - Knit
Row 4 - P3, make star, *P1, make star, rep from * to last 3 stitches, P3.

Make Star – P3 tog leaving stitches on the needle, YO, Purl 3 stitches together again.

I cast on 41 stitches and repeated the 4 row pattern approximately 45 times or about 30 1/2 inches.

Then I made the buttonholes as follows:

Row 1 – Row 1 - K9, YO, K2TOG, K9, YO, K2TOG, K9, YO K2TOG, K8.
Row 2 – P1, * make star, P1, rep from * to end.
Row 3 – Knit
Row 4 – P3, make star, *P1, make star, repeat from * to last 3 stitches, P3

Or you could just knit a row or two after the buttonhole row.

Create ruffle:

Row 1 – K1, Inc, K1, Inc across row. I used the K in front and back of stitch to increase.
Row 2 – Purl
Row 3 – Knit
Row 4 – Purl
Row 5 – Knit
Row 6 – Purl
Row 7 – Knit
Row 8 – Purl
Row 9 – Bind Off in Knit.

Add buttons and you are done.

To use two skeins, just keep knitting the pattern without buttonholes or ruffle and knit till you run out or save some yarn and add fringe to each end.

I made the short version (1 skein) of this scarf in about a week using a Worsted weight and it came out really well - have had MANY compliments on it. The directions are a little confusing in that it only has a ruffle on one end altho’ in the picture it appears as if both ends of the scarf have a ruffle on it. Additionally, the instructions are incorrect for the buttonhole section, starting in Row 1. It reads: Row 1 – K9, YO, K2TOG, K9, YO, K2TOG, K8 which only accounts for 31 stitches. Since we’re dealing with 41 stitches, it SHOULD read: Row 1 - K9, YO, K2TOG, K9, YO, K2TOG, K9, YO K2TOG, K8.
